RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY ANNOUNCES UK ENTRANTS FOR HISTORIC 10TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT
The Academy attracts some of the top names in the industry, and they will be out in Barcelona tutoring 60 lucky entrants from all over the globe - including 5 from the UK.
With over 3000 applications and months of workshop sessions across the globe, sixty participants have been selected to participate in the 10th year of the Red Bull Music Academy. Five of the UK's most talented DJs, MCs, Producers and Vocalists representing a wide spectrum of musical genres, will join the international musical revolution, which is The Red Bull Music Academy.
London has taken a clean sweep this year with all five UK applicants originating from the country's capital. The lucky participants will be able to hone and expand their eclectic mix of sounds, from acoustic rock and drum-n-bass to dubstep and techno - within the musical melting pot of support and knowledge, which RBMA provides.
UK PARTICPANTS:
Fatima, 23 years old, has got soul from her roots to her boots. Having already dropped her golden vocals on one of this year's anthems, Unite by TettoryBad coming out on Sonar Kollektiv and Jazzy Sport, Fatima has been performing vocal PA's from London to LA. Mixing RnB with soul, hip-hop, and plenty of bass, Fatima is on one long psychedelic musical journey.
As well as running one of London's leading music and spoken word gatherings called One Taste, 25 year old Jamie Woon has supported pioneers such as Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen, jazz legend Terry Callier and Amy Winehouse, while also clocking up the mileometer with numerous festival appearances this year. Jamie takes the timelessness of folk like Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Jeff Buckley and dub hero Lee Perry, and brings it to up to date with his own unique acoustic guitars and loop effects.
Creating hypnotic head-nod soundscapes and coaxing the soul out of machines is the name of this London-based producer's game. 2007 saw Lukid drop an LP and an EP on London-based indie label Werk Discs, full of emotive abstract electronic beats. This year, legendary street wear label Stussy snapped up a Lukid track for a compilation including hip hop's latest beat revolutionary (and Academy alumnus) Flying Lotus, while he finishes off his second album, due for release later this year.
23 year old Subeena knows a thing or two about how to make bass lines bounce. As well as making dark techno-flavoured dubstep, in between her music technology classes, Subeena also likes rocking the decks at her monthly residencies Platform 1 and D.O.T.S. - usually back to back with Dot, co-owner of Subeena's own label Immigrant Records.
Goldielocks has been making party anthems with an emphasis on heavy bass, snapping snares and trippy effects. Taking her cue from UK grime, Baltimore house, r 'n' b, and hip hop, 23 year old Goldielocks has got the game on lock, with a publishing deal from Puregroove, a 7" single and those Goldielocks hoodies that everyone's after. A far cry from the Motown cover band she was in as a kid at school, Goldielocks has had two of her songs featured in Brit film "Adulthood". Seems like everything she touches turns to precious metal.
Now in its 10th year, the RBMA will take place in Barcelona this year and continue to celebrate all the journeys, breakthroughs, dreams and intricacies that go into the music we love.? The best in music, past & present, from around the world will be showcased under one roof, just for the funk of it.
The Red Bull Music Academy 2008 takes place in Barcelona from 21st September to 24th October.
